Organization and Home Brewing

You may not be a neatness freak. Heaven knows many of us are as disorganized as the day is long, but if you want to get anywhere with your home brewing, it may be time to kill some of those old habits.

Organization of your equipment is essential. You don’t want to mix up buckets that are used for completely different drinks; otherwise you might get an unwelcome addition to a new brew from the remnants of your last one. Brewing is very specific in regards to time; you don’t want to be rushing about looking for something when it is time for the next stage of your process. Since cleanliness is such an important part of brewing, don’t mix your equipment with old sports equipment or the like, unless you want some unusual flavours in your brew.

Recipes should be tracked and kept in a safe spot. You might want to make sure that some of your friends who brew from home don’t get their hands on them either, or your brews will lose their mystique. Whenever a process works, write it down neatly on paper and keep it safe. Many a recipe has been lost to a hurried scribble, only to have the owner misread every word later on and make something altogether awful.

You don’t have to win any awards for your organizational skills. Just keep things in their proper place and you will find the business of brewing much easier and more straightforward.
