Yeast Starters for Home Brewers
Home brewers will find that yeast is one of the most important ingredients in the beer brewing process. Home brewers will mix ingredients for the brewing process, but only the yeast will allow the mixture (wort) to ferment and become alcohol.
Home brewers will need to make a “yeast starter” for their brewing process. The yeast starter is a measured amount of yeast that has been prepared to add to your wort to allow fermentation to begin. There is a good reason to have your yeast starter prepared and ready to use. The yeast will quickly mix with your beer, and help prevent harmful bacteria from ruining your mixture as the yeast begins the fermentation process.
The ingredients needed for yeast starters are dry malt extract, water, and a package of yeast. There are many recipes for yeast starters that use different measurements for the ingredients. A good recipe calls for one package of yeast, one-third cup of the malt, and two cups of water.
Combine the water and dry malt extract in a small pan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for one half hour. When the half hour is up, immediately put the pan in a sink full of ice to cool the mixture.
You will need a bottle that has been sterilized, a rubber stopper, an airlock, a funnel, and your yeast package. Pour the combined malt and water into the bottle and add the yeast. Put the stopper on the bottle and insert the airlock. You can swish the yeast around in the bottle to activate it, and then put the bottle in a dark cabinet for at least 24 hours.
The above is only a basic recipe for a yeast starter. As you become more adept in the brewing process, you will also want to experiment with your starter. |
